I wouldn't do it. Just plain a bad idea. But it's a free country.
No way to get optimum height except side by side at which point don't mess with the original designs.
Hello, and first, thanks to all who have shared their wealth of knowledge! This is my first post and I need some guidance and thanks in advance.
I have read many posts about altec speakers and haven't come across any where someone has built speakers of this type. My simple idea was to place altec 604 8g's and model 19 type speakers in the same cabinet. My reasoning is that I like both of these speakers and I prefer one over the other depending on the source and type of music. Also, it would save space and be a more modern design which fits my space. My question is this a good idea? and if so, what considerations our adaptations would you reccomend? I plan on using 3/4 marine or void free birch plywood. Thanks any advice would be truly appreciated!::

Your neighbors called. They like your music.
That would be a powerful speaker combo.....I think I saw something like that, except it didn't have any horn, just the regular driver (416 -515) on the bottom and a 604 above it. Like a stanley screamer kind of.
Thanks for the input! I was just wondering why this would be a bad Idea? 2 different speaker systems in one cabinet with shared volume to save space. Thanks
No, he wants to put all the drivers in the same box so he can switch back and forth, a completely different concept. How do you get optimum tweeter placement for both systems? you can't.
The screamer was a 3 way using the 604 high power versions horns as tweets. He is talking about two independent systems in a common cabinet.
You are thinking of the Urei 813 monitor with an Eminence sub, again COMPLETELY different.

The UREI 813 and 815 monitors did this many years ago, buy mainly to improve power handling and ultimate loudness, not to extend the bass response downward.
If I was going to build something like what you are proposing, I would lean towards an Onken W box with a 605 paired with a 416/803.

Thanks OG "You are thinking of the Urei 813 monitor with an Eminence sub, again COMPLETELY different." That's the exact picture I was picturing.
And I agree 2 systems one cabinet...yeah not a good Idea. For one thing when you run one set the other would be like a radiator.
Thanks for the responses and pictures! Maybe this is a bad idea? Looking at some of the newer designs of 604 based speakers like jean hiraga's and serious audio's, I just thought there was a way to place a model 19' type speaker underneath in the same box?I have no concerns of weight or height.
